A ‘three-dimensional’ international garment show started in Bangladesh on January 31, 2018, with expectations to draw huge visitors from the textile and apparel industry of the country.
Over 21 countries are participating in the four-day winter edition of the ‘13th Dhaka International Yarn & Fabric Show’, ‘2nd Dhaka International Denim Show’, and ‘30th Dye-Chem Bangladesh’ this year. The concurrent events are taking place at International Convention City, Bashundhara (Dhaka).
Participants, with a total of 350 stalls, are catering to the yarn, fibre, fleece, knitted fabric, coated artificial fur, artificial leather, denim accessories, embroidery/digital printer, adhesives, dyestuff, catalysts and other range of apparel needs of the flourishing industry of Bangladesh.
The platform(s) will enable the textile and apparel industry buyers to meet local and overseas textile and yarn manufacturers face-to-face for the excellent quality and reasonable prices, organisers of the show, CEMS Global told Apparel Resources , which was present there on the opening day of the shows. They believe that the events will facilitate the production of world-standard apparel products.
The organisers further informed us that the manufacturers’ showcase will be fully equipped with all ranges of textile products enhanced with the latest technology, which will set a new definition of smart fabrics in order to satisfy the growing demand of the international buyers.
At the inauguration ceremony, Bangladesh Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu, who was the Chief Guest at the programme, identified garment industry as “the most contributing” in Bangladesh and said the show is a “much-needed initiative”, to further help the sector in achieving its US $ 50 billion export target by 2021.
“The Government has drawn up initiatives to transform Bangladesh’s garment industry to high-tech industry based on knowledge and research. Also, efforts are underway to achieve self-sustaining produce of value-added products, raw materials and accessories of the garments industry. In line with our efforts, this initiative (the shows), I believe is a very timely and apt opportunity for Bangladesh,” he said at the fair.
Atiqul Islam, former President of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and currently the President of Centre of Excellence for Bangladesh Apparel Industry (CEBAI), said that such shows have brought the world closer and facilitated convenience for cross-border trade and strengthening business relations.
“Before such initiatives were taken up, we (the apparel manufacturers) used to travel abroad – from countries to countries – and search for the most suitable materials. Now, the arrangement of these shows has brought a variety of materials at the doorstep for our convenience. We would be greatly benefitted by these shows,” Atiqul added.
Need for R&D-driven factory design
A special attention to the focus of the inaugural discussion went to research and design with discussants feeling that greener factories and research-based industry design will lead to sustainable development of Bangladesh’s garment industry.
Atiqul said that CEBAI is a knowledge-based institution that has been established with the aim of developing the industry further through research. The institution is already engaged in capacity-building work of factory management and workers, as well as tapping into the potential of product innovation and diversity.
Further, Minister Amu cited a recent report of the US Green Building Council to say Bangladesh earned seven positions among the Top 10 environment-friendly factories in the world. “This is highly laudable. Our garment industry is becoming greener day by day,” he said.
Among others who graced the inaugural were Chen Wei, Charge d’Affaires at the embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Dhaka, Md Shafiul Islam Mohiuddin, President of Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI), Faruque Hassan, Senior Vice President at BGMEA, and Mansoor Ahmed, first Vice President of Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers & Exporters Association (BKMEA).
