Kunal Rawal’s latest collection fuses Neo-Traditionalism with modernity to appeal to the mega consumers of today- the millennial audience.

Dubbed “Future Past 2019”, the multifunctional collection marked a one-of-its-kind collaboration between the designer and boAt – a lifestyle brand for consumer electronics, at Lakmé Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2019.

Dipping into heritage archives, the collection featured Rawal’s signature style of working with motifs coming alive over luxurious traditional Indian handloom fabrics.

Inspired by the Morse code, the motifs predominantly mimicked linear patterns and dots over hoodies and layered kurta over-shirts. Bandhani techniques emanated with a fresh twist, popping up as innovative designs of cubes and checks rather than the staple dotted patterns, over both menswear and (a surprise) womenswear pieces.

Known for his unconventional take on heritage silhouettes, Rawal presented the Bandhgala in a myriad of options layered over shirts and kurtas. We spotted dapper waistcoats under jackets, over-shirts and kurtas. The sherwanis featured curved hemlines, paired with well-tailored close-fitting ankle length trousers.

Hints of bespoke streetwear were prevalent throughout the collection, whilst details such as quilting, shimmering sparkles, tone on tone looks, and micro-texturing lent an element of glamour to the range. All these features when combined with Rawal’s expert garment construction techniques, provided a multi-functional design sensibility for the buyer.

The ‘boAt X Kunal Rawal’ association saw a limited edition range of specially designed headphones and earphones.
