Although the resort season has come and gone (it’s generally at the beginning of the new year), trends from the 2017 collections have made their appearance in the last couple of months, with a bigger impact than ever before. In other words, resort wear now has status and appeal beyond the one-percenters, and of course in practical terms, beyond the lavish production of the shows, the season also provided a platform that allows fashion-lovers to stay on trend in the warmer months of the year. Hence, Team FFT has evaluated the most talked-about collections and identified influential detail trends of the season.

Piping

Piped edges outlined outerwear pieces, dresses, and separates in contrasting colours throughout the Resort 2017 collections. The subtle detail struck a chord with brands like Dior who used it on brightly coloured coats, Thom Browne elevated his pastel colour blocked skirt suits with black piping, Versace used orange on short brown coats, Delpozo made use of bright yellow piping on long printed dresses and Tory Burch kept it American with red piping on blue resort dresses.

Ruffles

The offbeat, loosely structured flounces of the past couple of seasons are holding fast, turning up everywhere from full skirts to crop tops. Prabal Gurung embraced the trend with a tiered gown that boasted of soft ruffled edges, while Givenchy mixed tiny tightly constructed ruffles on a skirt suit with exaggerated ones on the blouse where Spanish and Caribbean influences reigned. Louis Vuitton infused them on more modernistic dresses, Gucci incorporated them as details on coats and M Patmos covered the entire jacket unapologetically with tiny ruffles.

Mixed media

The only thing better than one interesting print is a bevy of them. Fausto Puglisi infused two different floral prints half-and-half on a short full-sleeve dress, whereas Christian Dior merged three different patterns of mini-florals on loose slip dresses. Alexander McQueen took it a notch higher by incorporating 5 to 6 different patterns, each used on a different panel of the garment. Carven used different fabrics to display the mixed media trend and so did Altuzarra, with various textures.

Flared

From full ’70s-style bell-bottoms to cropped trousers with more of a restrained kick, flares are alive… Andrew Gn displayed stark white pants with colourful tops to bring the bottom wear in focus; Ellery’s flared pants appealed due to the mesh top and workwear tailoring, while Prabal Gurung explored the metallic pantsuit. Moschino’s version was less about work and more about vacation with bright horizontal stripes, while Christian Dior opted for shiny leather in an eggshell shade, keeping the pant length cropped.

Metallic

Resort 2017 collections saw designers deliver futuristic shine via metallic materials in gold, silver, and rose gold for a maximalist take on neutrals. Carven used a shiny silver top, which was paired with a crochet yellow skirt, up till the waist; Ellery’s styles boasted of dull silver and exaggerated shoulders as Gucci models wore shiny pantsuits with miniscule prints reflecting on them. Marc Jacob’s version was all about the ’80s as the pants were gold and billowing with synching at the waist and used pleated shimmering skirts in addition to evening short dresses.
