The Resort season has long been associated not only as a filler in-between archetypical seasons, but also over the past 5 years or so, has managed to reinstate itself with a strong identity of its own.
Resortwear now enjoys and boasts of its own seasons’ full blown out collections, being a mainstay in all year round wardrobe. The collections have a personality of their own, mostly characterized by vivid prints, luxe materials, and detail oriented techniques.
Dominant trends from past seasons evolve to embrace a wider spectrum by introducing versatile styles. For example the trench has been reimagined to fit better into the lifestyles of consumers who are collectively experiencing a shift towards functionality and comfort. Gender neutrality tilts towards the colour palettes while the classic denim is seen experimenting with an array of rinses.
As the industry becomes more experience-driven, designers aim to create collections that inspire people to purchase more owing to lifestyle choices such as travel, fitness and wellness.
Designers are tapping into exotic locations to stage their shows with inspirations to match. A state of overall personal wellness and experience is emerging as an overarching theme this season.
Clench The Trench
The ultimate winter staple and epitome of English style has reinvented itself for the coming season, keeping in mind the spiking shift towards utility and comfort.
The timeless trench has undoubtedly reserved its spot in the ever-changing climate of trends, taking aspects of functionality and classic vintage elements into consideration. A slew of styles ranging from double-breasted to cropped, slit and deconstructed versions featured wide lapels, off-the-shoulder details and high-shine and glossy materials.
Bell The Bottom
The past few seasons have trained our minds to gradually tilt towards this mainstay from the bygone era what with the over inclusion of flared silhouettes and details finding their way from the runway directly into closets.
Giving the skinny figure-hugging silhouette a run for its money, the ’80s darling bell bottom has reappeared on the fashion landscape by presenting full blown proportions and hemlines that flare up towards the hems for Resort collections.
Intimate State
As the ‘innerwear is the new outerwear’ trend continues to spiral upwards, slip dresses, robes, wrap-around details and pyjamas have a few new accomplices on their shared list.
Resort 2018 saw a generous inclusion of transparency in the form of sheer and semi-sheer materials and lace being incorporated into the collections.
Embroidered lace over see-through surfaces, often collaged with contradictory fabric swatches such as velvet and/or PVC, emerged strong among various collections.
Think Pink
Millennials obsession with pink has taken on a stronger route. Resort 2018 dabbles with hues of pink that run deep and vivid.
Fuchsia pink slowly replaces millennial pink emerging on contrasting bases or all-over monochrome looks to add depth and character to the otherwise pastel effect brought in by its Spring/Summer counterpart.
The trend of pink as a colour has saturated across all levels of fashion, art and design extending onto interiors, home furnishings, retail spaces and even technology and resort collections have aimed to capture the sole essence of all these sectors under one big (pink) umbrella.
High Shine
Every other season, a particular detail stands out from among a sea of other typecasts. More common to spot among silhouettes, techniques and/or embroidery patches, this season offered a decorative element to take centre stage on the same lines of focus.
The embellishment of choice according to the recently concluded showcases is the quintessential pearl. Deployed as accessorizing details over embroidered dresses or dancing across hems on jackets and pants, pearls provided a contrasting elemental detail to Resort collections.
Denim
Denim is to material what black is to colour. This irreplaceable entity deserves (and has earned) an entire section of its own with every passing season and Resort 2018 has not failed to impress.
Jeans are presented with darker washes and distressed looks while incorporating high fashion decorative elemental details such as embellishments and embroidered patches.
The hemlines embrace frayed details and flared forms with an overarching voluminous silhouette for the approaching seasons.
Animal Instincts
Resortwear has long been synonymous to tropical flora and fauna influences and this season is no novice to the fact.
Animal prints merged beautifully against tropical landscapes, shying away from the obvious birds and critters and giving way to fiercer elements such as wildlife, reptiles and snakes.
Tiered Ruffles
A dose of romanticism was in order and designers and high fashion brands presented pieces after pieces of the beloved ruffle.
Since it came into the limelight, the superfluous feminine ruffle has strategically evolved itself to encompass and address a wider audience.
This season saw layers of tiered frills dancing along waists, buttocks and hems, creating the right paraphernalia for a boomerang.
