The biggest sewing technology event in Asia is just round the corner!

China International Sewing Machinery & Accessories Show (CISMA) is all set to kick start from 25 to 28 September 2019 in Shanghai, China focusing on ‘Intelligent Manufacturing’ and the theme will be ‘Smart Sewing Factory – Technologies and Solutions’.

The thrust of technology in China has been grabbing the eyeballs of the global apparel and textile industry and, to capitalise on this trend, technology suppliers are already geared up to be a part of this technology extravaganza which will bring them together with technology seekers on a common platform. The 4-day event will sprawl over an area of 115,000 square metres of Shanghai New Int’l Expo Center (SNIEC).

In the 2017 edition, a total 1,227 exhibitors from 21 countries showcased solutions that were seen by over 64,000 visitors from across the world. As per China Sewing Machinery Association (CSMA), which is the exclusive organiser of the show, the number of exhibitors and visitors is expected to increase this year as the Government is pushing the industry to integrate more intelligent sewing solutions in their businesses under ‘Made in China 2025’ policy. This policy is therefore further pushing sewing machine manufacturers to upgrade their technologies in order to cater to the rapidly advancing Chinese apparel manufacturing industry and come up with more innovations continuously.

Renowned enterprises including SG Group, Typical, Zoje, Jack, Feiyue, Hikari, Maqi, Precious, Duerkopp Adler, Pfaff, Juki, Brother, Pegasus, Yamato, Lectra, Eastman, Gerber Technology, Bullmer, FK Group, Morgan Tecnica, Groz-Beckert will be up with their cutting edge technology solutions in the upcoming edition of CISMA. CISMA will also showcase products in CAD, spreading, laser, cutting, embroidery, hanging and ironing equipment. The range of services this time is expanded to clothing, shoes and hats, luggage, household products, automobile, aerospace and aviation.

Sensing the need of automation in the country, France-based integrated cutting technology company Lectra will officially launch its breakthrough Lectra 4.0 solutions – Fashion on Demand and Furniture on Demand in China as well as Asia. Developed on Industry 4.0 principles, these solutions support companies in their digital transformation by using data, artificial intelligence (AI), the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and cloud technology.

Resulting from a four-year research-and-development process, the revolutionary digital solution for on-demand production comes in three packages for a modular and scalable offer: Made To Order for sampling, small series and quick assortment; Made To Customise for customisation orders; and Made To Measure for made-to-measure clothing.

In fact, China is home to the world’s popular sewing machinery products and technical expertise apart from an astute sense of marketability. This has made investors cast a special eye on China. With leading brands of the country fiercely taking on the customised products, developments and automation in sewing machine to the next level, a strong demand and a large group of customers are emerging who have immense requirement for such advancements.

Renowned Chinese sewing machine manufacturing company Jack will have home advantage in CISMA and the company will take this event as a platform to launch its much awaited IPMS software – an Internet of Things (IoT) based solution, as well as A7 model of its eminent A series of SNLS machines.

China is not expecting ‘intelligentisation’ of just sewing machines, rather whole assembly and production lines of a garment unit. And, since trend of automation is right now on top in the country, the other parts of the world will surely get benefits out of this. “Intelligent manufacturing is the theme of sewing machinery that cannot be deviated from now on and in the near future and that’s why we are taking this as an opportunity to increase our footprints in vibrant denim industry in China as well as other Asian countries with some newly launched and upgraded versions of previous jeans automats,” said Veeru Maknur, Sales Manager (India), Vibemac – an Italian pioneer in jeans automation which was taken over by Jack last year.

US-based Eastman Machine Company is also looking at tapping opportunities in CISMA. The company along with its representative from Hong Kong, and Ningbo will be exhibiting technological innovations for the sewn product industry, from front-end material preparation through automatic cutting, at the event.

Also, the range of high-ply cutting and spreading equipment as well as solution for single-ply cutting cutting will be demonstrated on all four days. The main highlight will be the Raptor 75xTM Multi-Ply Cutting System, which is an automated reciprocated straight knife cutter, with conveyor, capable of cutting up to 7.5 cm (3 inches) of compressed material. System operations combined with the state-of-the-art control communication deliver outstanding results for medium-to-high cutting of flexible material goods. The technology has already made few installations at facilities cutting for garment and industrial fabrics application like marine, medical and agricultural products.

Japanese knitting technology giant Shima Seiki is also participating in the event for the first time. The solutions will be exhibited through demonstrations of company’s CAD/CAM lineup consisting of the SDS-ONE APEX4 design system, P-SPR2K fabric spreading machine with labelling option, P-CAM161 multiply computerised cutting machine and pick-up table with a pick-up projector.

SDS-ONE APEX4 being exhibited first time in China is the latest design system with fabric simulation capabilities in circular knitting, flat knitting, weaving and printing. The system reduces the sampling time, cost and material. The technology encapsulated with PGM software features improved interface and up to a 40 per cent increase in productivity compared to the previous APEX3 system.

Not just technology providers, visitors also keep a watch over the developments that they expect to see in this leading technology event in Asia. Most of the garment manufacturers see rising operational cost as growth hampering factor for themselves. In today’s time, a manufacturer can’t afford missing on production targets as this can lead them to experience some unwanted situation in subsequent processes. In order to avoid all these challenges, CISMA will be a must-attend event for the manufacturers. Helal Uddin Ahmed, Chairman, Jeans Concept Ltd., Dhaka (Bangladesh), commented, “I am visiting CISMA in September to see some high-end automation preferably in jeans segment using which we can reduce human intervention. I have heard some jeans automation companies will launch upgraded versions of their previous models. One machine can club 3 to 4 operations so it will be great saving of manpower and we can get desired quality in the final product which is what we need in our company to stay competitive,” adding, “Not just new machines, I am also hopeful to see some attachments that can be added in already installed machines in order to do more than one operation on that machine. This way we can again save labour cost as well as new machine cost. So, I am really looking forward to see innovations that apparel industry never experienced before.”

Pawan Arya, VP (Operations), Orient Craft Limited , India, averred that the leading fair in Shanghai always displays array of technologies right from sewing, cutting, finishing to embroidery, laser technology and others but this time I will visit CISMA to see if robotic in sewing is successful or not. “Pick and place through robotic arm is a requirement of apparel industry since long, but still I have not come across any technology supplier who is providing such technology. Human intervention can be reduced only by bringing in some high-end automation and robotics in sewing division. So, my expectation from upcoming CISMA will be robotics in sewing machines and I am hopeful I will be able to see it,” said Pawan.
